How To Make Laundry Detergent
January 13, 2012Sometimes laundry detergent can be a pain to your wallet or your skin or maybe even your clothes! Here is a low cost DIY project that you can use as your daily laundry soap and never worry about those problems AGAIN!!!
What You Will Need:
1 Cup of Borax
1 Cup of Arm & Hammer super washing soda
1 Bar of Fels-Naptha soap
Grater
Glass or plastic container with lid ( like a Tupperware bowl that you don't use anymore. )
Grate the bar of fels-naptha soap as finely as possible. You can grate it directly into the container you plan to store your laundry detergent in, or into a separate mixing bowl if that's more practical. If you use your kitchen cheese grater, that's fine, just be sure to clean it thoroughly before using it for food again.
Add one cup of borax and one cup of washing soda and mix thoroughly.
Store in a clean, dry glass or plastic container with a tight-fitting lid.
To use, add one tablespoon to a small load, or two for a large load.
Tips & Warnings
-
For a great, cheap, natural fabric softener, add 1/4 cup white vinegar to your last rinse cycle (you can use a downy ball to dispense it automatically if your washer doesn't have a fabric softener dispenser.)
-
Treat these ingredients with care. While none of them are very dangerous or toxic, they are chemicals. Avoid inhaling them and wash them off your skin thoroughly and definitely don't touch your eyes, nose, or mouth while working with them.
